reactivate your creative mojo
Forgive me, friend, for I have sinned. It’s been over 3 months since my last post…
“It’s no sin,” you might be thinking.
And you’re right.
But as someone who enjoys writing, feels called to write, and coaches others to “thrive in their calling”, you have to admit that a quarter-year pause reflects a disconnect between my BELIEF that writing matters and my actual WRITING.
So what led to the pause?
Like most people, I have a “normal” workload I have learned to build a schedule around.
Typically, I prioritize client meetings and projects on Mon/Tue/Fri, “hearth and home” tasks on Wednesdays, and keep Thursdays open to listen and lean into how God is asking me to use my own voice in the world.
But then I added a few extra’s…
In October I volunteered to help out with a fundraising project.
In November I prepared for a special musical event here in Nashville.
In December I caught up on a backlog of projects that were waiting for my attention.
And then there was the necessary time to “recover” from such a busy season…
And that, my friends, is how you lose momentum on growing creatively...
It’s not that I regret doing any of these “extras”; on the contrary, I felt God leading me to say yes to them. But doing so did make it harder to say no to meetings or projects on Thursdays, and soon I had edged myself out of having the unhurried time I need to write things that feel worthy of posting.
When we treat creative time like a luxury and not a necessity it will always get last place. But we have the power to flip the script.
The easiest way to reactivate your creative mojo is to:
A) Schedule time to be creative, and
B) fiercely guard that time.
Yes, there will be moments when Jesus leads us to help others or to be flexible with our rhythms, but good stewardship means valuing the creativity God’s given us as much as he does. And that means investing time and space for it to grow.
So today, I’m (almost) back to guarding my Thursdays. I do have three meetings this afternoon, which is not ideal, but I did keep the morning open, and even got up a little early to have more time to write this note to you.
Starting next week, I’m going to become more intentional about protecting the WHOLE day. That’s my own little step forward.
Little steps are all any of us needs to create positive movement.
What will yours be?
For TRUTH…
